Restricted Access Vehicles
Certain classes of heavy vehicles (restricted access vehicles) may only be used on a public road it the operator has been granted access through a notice or a permit (mass or dimension authority). This is granted through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).
This is under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). It is despite the fact that these vehicles may be registered and compliant with the HVNL and other legal requirements.
Restricted access vehicles are subject to restrictions to ensure that the use of these vehicles does not endanger public safety, and to minimise or avoid any adverse impact on road infrastructure and public amenity.
