Situated behind the Council Office chambers is the Community Archives Storage Room. This building was erected in 1992 in a joint effort between the Council and the Wudinna & Districts Historical Society. Community groups can store their records in the room at no charge. Members of the public are permitted to view and borrow records stored in the Community Archives. Please visit the Council Office to obtain a key.

Historical Information

Historical information on the district has been compiled in several publications. The following two publications are available to purchase from the Council Office:

  • 'Grain Amid Granite' by Erna Franklin and Edna Heath. $16.50. Hardcover, 260 pages, illustrated. Published 1986. 'The history of the Wudinna District including the towns of Minnipa, Yaninee, Pygery, Wudinna, Kyancutta and Warramboo'. Chapter headings include: Pre Settlement, Settlement - The Early Years, District Council, Major Constructions, Agricultural Development in the Wudinna District, Essential Services, The Churches, District Organisations, Minnipa Ward, Carina Ward, Yaninee Ward, Pygery Ward, Wudinna Ward, Warramboo Ward, Cootra Ward.

  • 'A Salute to Pioneers' by Melva Winter & the Kyancutta History Book Committee. $10.00. Hardcover, 190 pages, illustrated. First published 1974, updated 1998. 'A History Update of the Kyancutta District'. Includes settlement history, flora and fauna information, and the histories of many local families and local organisations.
Poppies in the Wheat
  • 'Poppies in the Wheat, The Memories of Kath Hunt' as told by Craig Hunt, $20.00. Paperback, 270 pages, Illustrated. Published 2004. "A personal account of pioneers, a rural childhood & the challenges of farming during the Depression."
CEP and GR
  • 'Central Eyre Peninsula & Gawler Ranges'. $2.00. Booklet, 18 pages. Pictorial book is a joint venture between Central Eyre Development Organisation and Wudinna and Districts Tourism Association to promote our unique and natural assets within this area. Proceeds go to the Wudinna and Districts Business and Tourism Association.
Ucontitchie Hill
  • 'Ucontitchie Hill' by GR Twidale, EM Campbell & MR Foale. $6.60. Paperback, 48 pages, illustrated. Published in 1985. "Ucontitchie Hill is one of the most intricately sculptured inselbergs on Eyre Peninsula. Scenically spectacular it offers an immense amount of crucil evidence concerning the general theory of inselberg development. It is for good reason that it is well-known to scientists the world over."
 

 

The proceeds of 'A Salute to Pioneers' and 'Poppies in the Wheat' goes to the Kyancutta Progress Association. Historical information can also be obtained from Council staff, the Community Archives, the Wudinna School/Community Library or the local Historical Society.
