Changes to How the Mayor is Elected from 2026

Changes to How the Mayor is Elected from 2026

Changes to local government legislation in South Australia will introduce a new process for the election of Mayors (Principal Members).

Currently, the Mayor of the Wudinna District Council is chosen by the elected councillors following a local government election. From the 2026 local government elections onward, the Mayor will instead be elected directly by the community.

What Will Change?

Under the new arrangements, all eligible voters across the district will vote to elect the Mayor.

The Mayor will provide leadership across the entire Council area and act as the principal spokesperson for the Council and community.

What Will Stay the Same?

  • The council will continue to operate as a no-ward council structure.
  • Council will continue to comprise six (6) area councillors representing the district.
  • The principal member of Council will continue to hold the title of Mayor, as described under Section 51(1) of the Act.

How Council Decisions Will Work

Under the legislated model:

  • Councillors will continue to debate and vote on Council motions.
  • The Mayor will not ordinarily vote on Council decisions.
  • Where a vote is tied, the Mayor will exercise a casting vote to determine the outcome.

These changes are intended to provide a clear distinction between the leadership role of the Mayor and the representative role of councillors, while ensuring Council can continue to make decisions when votes are evenly split.

Further information will be provided over the coming months as preparations continue for the 2026 local government elections.
